This acidic environment is essential for maintaining the structural integrity of the hair fibre, keeping the cuticle scales flat and tight, which promotes shine, smoothness, and moisture retention. It also supports a healthy scalp microbiome, preventing the overgrowth of harmful bacteria and fungi that can lead to dandruff, itching, and inflammation. When you use a shampoo that is highly alkaline (a pH of 7 or higher), it can disrupt this delicate balance, causing the cuticle to swell and open. The rise of ‘pH‑balanced’ haircare lines is a direct response to this scientific understanding, with brands formulating their products to match the hair’s natural state, often using citric acid or other mild acids to adjust the pH. For consumers, a simple test can indicate whether a product is too alkaline: if the hair feels dry and tangled after shampooing, even before conditioning, the pH is likely too high. Switching to a balanced shampoo and following up with a pH‑adjusted conditioner can yield immediate improvements in smoothness and shine. Additionally, the pH of the water you use can vary; hard water tends to be more alkaline, leaving mineral deposits on the hair. Using a clarifying or chelating shampoo periodically can help remove these deposits and restore balance. Ultimately, understanding and respecting the pH balance of your hair is a fundamental, yet low‑cost, strategy to achieve and maintain healthy, vibrant hair, and it reinforces the importance of choosing products that work in harmony with your hair’s biology.
